Distressing or traumatic experiences can continue to affect people long after the immediate danger has passed. This may involve intrusive memories or nightmares, feeling constantly alert to danger, avoiding reminders of what happened, emotional numbness, difficulties trusting others, or changes in how you think about yourself and the world.
For some people these experiences meet the criteria for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD); for others, trauma may contribute to difficulties that do not fit neatly within a single diagnosis.
Our HCPC-registered Clinical Psychologists provide careful assessment and evidence-based psychological therapy for trauma-related difficulties. Treatment is tailored to the individual and may include established trauma-focused approaches where clinically appropriate. We recognise that trauma can be complex and that therapy needs to proceed at an appropriate pace. The first step is developing a clear understanding of your experiences, current difficulties and what you would like to change.
